I'd like to start collecting children's books. I love Dr Seuss and loved reading them when I was little.
What were your favorites? What are your children's favorites?

I loved "So the things you can think" I guess because it had such silly words it just made me laugh. I also had "Great Day for Up" which I liked, and Grace likes that now too, especially because when she sees the word "up" I point to it and she reads that part.
Love Green Eggs and Ham, I mean who doesn't? That's another fav in this house.
one that means alot to me is Oh the Places You'll Go, a friend gave that to me when I finished Uni, I love that book, it has alot of meaning.
the kids at school LOVED when I read Fox in Socks to them, we all laughed at the tongue twisters.
I liked Oh, Say Can you Say too, another fun book.

Thanks!! :) I think for now for babies through a couple years will do. But that's a great list. Will definitely keep those in mind. :)
All of the Sandra Boynton board books. The "going to bed" book is one of the kids favorites. I also love her CD/book combos. I could listen to them all day.
Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. A Must have!!
Oooh, I have a paper I wrote on this somewhere! I'll try and look it out!

other authors-

The Snowy Day
Good Night Moon
Mother Goose
Christian Mother Goose (puts a Christian spin on the oldies...my kids love it!!)
oh yeah, I forgot two of their FAV's of all time...
There's a Monster At The End Of This Book 1 & 2 (Sesame Street)
I like most of the ones Shannon posted (a few I don't know!)
Mem Fox is a great author - she is a professor of literacy and her books are written really well. If you google her name her site is the first one that comes up and you can read all about her :)
We love almost all books. I can't stand poor grammar in books - The Tonka books are HORRIBLE. The grammar and sentence structure is wrong. He was given 4 or 5 of them and I threw them out.
I blogged about some of our favorites in the last month... did you see them? I can send you the link if you'd like. let me know :)
Isaac loves Dr Suess...he'll actually sit and listen.
He loves "Go Dogs Go"
"Wocket in my Pocket"
"Hop on Pop"
"Green Eggs and Ham"
Of course they are all good.
Found it, Jess. I'm linking here so I can find it faster when I go to buy some:

Sarah, I remember reading the Christian Mother Goose book when I was a kid.
Thanks for all the fab suggestions!!!
As for Dr. Suess, Helen LOVES The Foot Book. She has it memorized.
Actually, Helen loves all books. Right now (she's almost 3) she's really in to The Berenstain Bears (which I really like too because they usually have some kind of lesson), If I had a Dragon, Baby Shoes, all of Doreen Cronin's books and, of course, her Beginner's Bible (which we read at least one story from every day).
We love to read and even Patrick (3 months old) seems to listen and pay attention during reading time.
Since I'm the one reading them for the 1st 5 years, I stick to books I enjoy reading out loud.
Dr. Suess is at the top of my list. As well as authors in the Dr. Suess 'franchise' like P.D Eastman.
I also enjoy Eric Carle books for his wonderful illustrations.
I avoid like the plague all trendy books like Disney books and Dora the Explorer type stuff.
Growing up, my favorite Dr. Seuss books were "Horton Hatches the Egg" and "Dr. Seuss's ABC." ("Big A, little a, what begins with A?")
Two non-Seuss books I loved (and still do!) -->
“The Monster at The End of This Book (Starring Lovable, Furry Old Grover)”, written by Jon Stone and illustrated by Mike Smollin. Grover tries to do things like tie the pages together and build brick walls to keep the reader from turning pages, because there is a monster at the end of the book and he’s scared. When you get to the end, Grover turns out to be the monster, of course, but he tries to save face by saying, “I TOLD you and TOLD you there was nothing to be afraid of.” :)
“Spectacles” by Ellen Raskin. It’s a fun little story about a nearsighted girl named Iris Fogel who sees things like a fire-breathing dragon that turns out to be her great aunt. :)
