Breakfast of Champions?

I love cereal. I could eat cereal for any meal. I love it dry as a snack and with almond or rice milk for lunch or dinner. One of my favorite cereals is honey nut cheerios. I don't get the regular brand though, I go for one of the organic ones. I figure if I'm going to eat something unhealthy, I might as well get it as healthy as I can, right? I usually buy Cascadian Farms, but last time I decided to try something new. It was on sale. It seemed like a good deal.

See the box? It says, "Excellent Source of Iron & Zinc... Fortified with 9 Essential Vitamins & Minerals". But they left something out. I opened up my new box of cereal to find all 9 essential vitamins and minerals... and bugs! More specifically the larvae stage of some grain-loving bug, which, by the way, is the grossest stage ever because they all look like maggots. Now, when I say I prefer to eat organic, I don't mean THAT organic.

I'm a vegetarian, you know. Can't be having bugs in my cereal. After sticking the box in the freezer (which first immobilizes any adult bugs, then kills all stages) to preserve the evidence so I could take them with me to yell at the store that sold them to me, I washed my hands about a billion times and found something else to eat. I think I'm scarred for life though. I will never look at a newly opened cereal box in the same way again.

I think I'll be sticking with Cascadian Farms. They cost a little more, but usually come without the bugs.

That is completely and utterly disgusting!!!!!! YUCK YUCK YUCK!!!!!

That being said, I eat cereal all the time. I love it! Plus, I think it is NOT bad for you (so long as you don't buy sugar cereals, or ones with bugs in it) and they are all fortified too.

Yes, very disgusting. Ick.

Honey nut cheerios have quite a bit of sugar in them, plus white flour. *sigh* But they sure taste good!

As far as your comment on my blog...I hate to admit it, but yes, for us thats what it took! But I'll NEVER say that to anyone.

Yeah, I wish I hadn't read that. I was already nauseous. We buy cascadian farms too, but only what's on sale. I actually don't like cereal except for a snack.

Blech!!!! My skin is crawling just thinking about your buggy cereal.

A friend of mine bought a bag of organic walnuts last year, and the bag included a few uninvited visitors. The moths ended up infesting her entire pantry; she had to get rid of nearly everything but the canned goods. She now calls the incident "Mothra '07". *shudder*

Yes, that's happened to me before too. Only I bought something from the bulk bins and it was weevils and not moths! I think it was oat bran or something. Whatever it was must have had eggs in it because I did not see anything there when I bought it, but a couple months later I had pantry bugs in EVERYTHING.

It took two rounds of throwing things out and cleaning to get rid of them all. Ugh.

EEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWW! I think if I actually saw that, it might have turned me off of all cereal in the future. LOL

I love cereal, too, but not the healthy kinds. I'm a Cocoa Krispies kind of gal.

DId you return the cereal to the store yet? What did they say?
